越……越How to Say "The More... the More" with 越……越

越 (yuè) is used in pairs. 越 A 越 B means "the more A, the more B": as one thing grows, so does the other. 越来越 means "more and more", for something that keeps changing over time.

越 + verb + 越 + adjective

Subject + 越 + verb + 越 + adjective.

With one subject, the first 越 goes before the verb and the second before the result. 雨越下越大 says that the longer it rains, the heavier it gets. 越 always comes after the subject, never before it.

  1. 雨越下越大。Yǔ yuè xià yuè dà.The rain is getting heavier and heavier.
  2. 他越说越快。Tā yuè shuō yuè kuài.He talked faster and faster.
  3. 汉语越学越有意思。Hànyǔ yuè xué yuè yǒu yìsi.The more you learn Chinese, the more interesting it gets.

Two different subjects

Subject 1 + 越 + A, subject 2 + 越 + B.

Each part can have its own subject. Put each 越 after its subject.

  1. 你越说,他越不高兴。Nǐ yuè shuō, tā yuè bù gāoxìng.The more you say, the less happy he gets.
  2. 东西越便宜,买的人越多。Dōngxi yuè piányi, mǎi de rén yuè duō.The cheaper something is, the more people buy it.

越来越: "more and more"

Subject + 越来越 + adjective (+ 了).

越来越 says that something keeps changing as time goes by. It goes before an adjective, or before verbs of feeling such as 喜欢. The sentence often ends with 了, because it describes a change.

  1. 天气越来越冷了。Tiānqì yuè lái yuè lěng le.It's getting colder and colder.
  2. 我越来越喜欢这个城市了。Wǒ yuè lái yuè xǐhuan zhège chéngshì le.I like this city more and more.
  3. 学汉语的人越来越多了。Xué Hànyǔ de rén yuè lái yuè duō le.More and more people are learning Chinese.

No 很 after 越

越 already means "more", so don't add 很, 非常 or 太 after it. 天气越来越很冷 is wrong; say 天气越来越冷了. The other common mistake is to forget the second 越: 他越走慢 should be 他越走越慢.

  1. 他的汉语越来越好了。Tā de Hànyǔ yuè lái yuè hǎo le.His Chinese is getting better and better.
